Benefits:
- Reduces stress, energizes and lifts moods
- Accelerates recovery from surgery
- Increases metabolic rate, burning calories aiding weight loss
- Effective treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and other disorders
The use of light to impact Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is well known and documented. SAD is a mood disorder
characterized by recurrent episodes of winter depression, with remission periods in the spring and summer. Patients with
SAD tend to overeat, crave carbohydrates, gain weight, sleep more and are tired frequently. While it is still unknown
specifically why light therapy has an effect on mental depression the efficacy of phototherapy for SAD has been generally
acknowledged. Recent studies into the increases and decrease of enzymes and proteins may have that explanation,
particularly when it comes to the mononuclear leukocyte G protein levels in our systems.
Studies have also shown that light therapy can have a positive effect on other disorders such as:
- non-seasonal depression
- premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- migraines
- circadian rhythm sleep-phase disorders
- sleep maintenance insomnia
- jet lag
- sleep problems resulting from shift work
- Promotes the healing of wounds and the effects of surgery
When light enters the eyes and strikes the retina, the resulting nerve signals pass not only to the visual cortex of the
brain, so we can see objects, but also, over separate nerve pathways to other brain structures including the hypothalamus,
the pineal and pituitary systems, and the limbic system, causing hormonal and emotional effects. Light enters the eyes not
only to serve vision, but also to go to the body's biological clock within the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus controls
the nervous system and endocrine system, whose combined effects regulate all the biological functions in humans.
In addition, the hypothalamus controls most of the body's regulatory functions by monitoring light-related information and
sending it to the pineal gland, which then uses this information to cue other organs to keep the body in balance.
Light therapies can be categorized by the following forms:
- Bright light
